Living in Limbo

       Some of the beliefs of Dante and what hell looks like is not really what some believe hell is. In Dantes hell there is no room for forgiveness. It seems that if people commit a sin they cannot redeem themselves. This is strange because god is suppose to be very forgiving and knows when one is being good or bad. Also, some of the sins are not really sins. Suicide and homosexuality to some do not belong in that category because they are things that one chooses. Some of the reasons these are in Dantes hell is because of the time he lived and the rules back then.

      One interesting canto and circle of hell is Limbo. Limbo is a place for people born before Christ and could not worship him properly. This seems a bit unfair because they didn't even know about Christianity. These people could have had the chance to worship Jesus but did not have the proper tools and had no idea that they were doing something wrong. There are also a lot of famous poets and artists that live in limbo. For these poets, limbo is torture because they have to live with the fact that there will never be any salvation from god. This circle is basically taking away all hope for the people in it.

Hell is Cold and Hot

      Hell is a place where people that do bad things go to learn a lesson and be forgiving for there bad deeds. Hell to me does not look like fire and cold it is like a simulation room where the environment is constantly changing. This is giving the person simulations to see if he or she has learned her lesson. Hell basically is just to teach the people who did bad stuff lessons and show them that bad things can hurt them. I think there is some pain in hell because without pain you cant learn anything from it. No one specifically is in my hell just people who commit crimes and serious ones.

1. To get into hell you have to commit a crime such as murder, theft, rape and other things like that. I don't think you can get into hell if you don't have faith because that is almost discriminatory. Also Sometime people who are good are heart will just do something bad but after they will already have learned there lesson. These people already because they are good at heart faced the punishment because they still have to deal with this all life and feel bad about it. Bad people will not think twice about what they did. These are the people who should be in my hell and suffering to learn there lesson.

2. The punishments for hell are just learning your lesson and the longer it takes the more pain and suffering you will get. I think that there will be people that act like they learned there lesson so that's why in hell there is a simulation room that test them and sees if they truly are sorry and feel bad. I think some of the punishments include trying to make the person feel sorry by showing them the repercussions of what happened to the people. Also in the simulation room you simulate things that they did happening to the ones they loved to show them the pain that they caused. There is also some sort of physical suffering because there actions also caused that. It is basically a lot like karma what ever they did will happen to them to show them that it sucks. 

3.My hell looks like a science lab that includes torture and simulations so you learn your lesson. Also the environment will be changing and just making the people in there suffer and feel like they are the only reason they are there. One environment I don't think is good because people will get use to it and it will no longer affect them. the environments are never nice always a place tat seems like a struggle to survive. They are always changing right as the person is getting use to them so they can suffer. This is only one part of hell there are other parts like rooms designed to make you feel emotional pain. Also room to make you feel physical pain. 

4. Yes, hell to me is like a jail where people learn there mistakes and rehabilitate. There is no life sentence I think were people must stay forever. But if there is people who leave hell and them do something bad they will stay longer the next time they go. There is no life sentence but thy will never know when they are getting out. There will be no fixed date on when they can get out. This will make them go crazy becuase they think that they might stay there forever but if they learn there lesson they will go back. Also once they commit a second crime they must know that there is no way to get away with it they will go back to hell. 

5. Probably like a jail because it is a place that is not fun but people learn there lessons. Because my hell is based on just teaching people there lesson it is much like a jail. My hell has the exception of making the person suffer and endure what he has cause people to endure. I think that sometimes in cases where people have committed very serious crimes even when they learn there lesson. This is simply because of the degree of the horrible things they did. The thing that is different is that people must except that they will not be able to get out till they learn there lesson.

6. Just people who are evil at heart. The thing about this is it is hard for me to judge who would be in hell. I think that there should be a person that is not human who judges this. I think this simply because even though I don't agree with a lot of the stuff people do there is always people who do agree with them. For example Hitler and Stalin did some terrible things in my mind but it is all based on perspective. When looking at there leaders there where still people who believed them and agreed with there theory. These people had beliefs and tried to express them. That is why i think a non human source should decide who should be in my hell.

A Tragic Project

       The tragic hero is very interesting because it bring out such a sad and angry emotion. One knows that the hero should not do this and it saddens and makes one mad when he does. Like in I am Legend,  it would be annoying to watch this hero make so many mistakes and underestimate the zombies so many times. Also, In Oedipus Rex, One fells annoyed when Oedipus states things that are very ironic. This is because the audience knows what this character has done. Everyone has a tragic flaw but not all of them go to far to the point of no return. Once in a life time a person will feel pride and continue till he loses many things.

      There are probably a lot of real world examples of tragic heroes today. Some people that are not really hero are dictators and corrupted leaders. These people have everything they could ask for but are so powerful they want more power even though they are living well. The tragic hero is very interesting because it is a very human trait. Humans are almost never satisfied. With many people wanting more and more stuff most people cant be happy with what they have. Of course there are people who are very happy with what they have but a lot of people go to far.

Zombies and Viruses

     This week in class Mrs. Cawlfield tough about the tragic hero and some of the definitions and things that would help with posters. When learning about the tragic hero, there are a lot of movies that comes to mind that have a tragic hero. One movie is = I am legend. This movie has a character who is named Robert Neville. Neville's tragic flaw is underestimation the zombies. One thing that was cool is watching the titanic and realizing that the captain is a tragic hero. His tragic flaw is he wants to be remembered as the best ship captain.

     In I am Legend one part of the tragic hero is, hubris or tragic flaw. Neville starts off as a high ranking officer and risks all that to try and save the world. His tragic flaw is underestimating the zombies. He thinks that we can take on the zombies and in return dies because of his pride. Because of this flaw Neville never returns to his high status. Neville also is never able to return to his family because of his tragic flaw. This tragic flaw Is very unique because it is set in a world with zombies.

The Week of Sleeping

This week class was pretty fun and pretty relaxed again which I like. I like reading so when we got to read all during class period it was cool for me. Like i said in my last blog when we read in the morning and do something relaxed it really is a good way to start the day because its a really easy way to wake up. I liked the play that we read but it was kind of disturbing. With all the talk leading up to it you could not help but cringe every time Oedipus made a comment regarding his fate. Also there was some disturbing scenes where he takes his eyes out. Also learning about all these ancient writers because it is the foundation that a lot of writing is based on. all and all I really thought this week was cool because it was relaxed and we got to read.

A Week like a Mirror

I think that this week was fun because it was a relaxed week and we just learned stuff but didn't do some really deep thinking stuff. I think that is one of the problems with having world lit first period is sometimes in this class you really have to think deeply about certain things in a book and most of the time in the morning I really cant think that deeply. I still really enjoy this class and cant wait to start analysis books again because last semester it was hard but it was still really cool to see everyone's opinions on cretin things in the book and hot they see the meanings. I can wait till next week when we start doing projects because we don't do a lot of those in this class and it will be fun to work with my friends.

Sophocles and Many More

Sophocles: Sophocles is a writer who lived in ancient Greek at around 400 B.C. He wrote 123 plays in his life time and only about 7 of them have survived. He also competed in about 30 festival competitions and won about 24 of them. He died at about the age of 90 and it is unknown on how he died.


     Oedipus Rex (Play): Oedipus Rex is an Athenian tragedy written by Sophocles and pro formed in 429 B.C. This play was the the second of three Theban plays. The play is a classic tragedy where the characters own fault leads to his downfall instead of having fate being the only cause of his fall.


Oedipus Rex (Man): Oedipus Rex is a man who's fate is to kill his father and marry his mother. Like anyone Oedipus try's to avoid this fate. These actions that Oedipus takes later come back and the prophecy is fulfilled due to those actions. As you can see fate is not the only thing that fulfills this but it is also Oedipus's chooses that help.

Oedipus Rex (Myth): Many variations of this myth are referenced by many ancient Greek poets such as Homer. The most popular version is comes from a set of Theban plays by Sophocles. It shows how a characters own chooses effect his decided fate to fulfill it. As Oedipus try's to run from his fate ultimately he confronts it and fulfills it.

Tragedy: Aristotelian tragedy is a form of Greek tragedy that meets the requirements laid out by poetics. It also follows the concept of tragic hero where the hero's decisions ultimately lead to his downfall. It also includes the idea that every tragedy must have six parts and those parts are, plot, character, diction, thought, spectacle, melody.

Hubris: Hubris means extreme pride or arrogance. It also refers to the overestimation of ones capability's or accomplishments. We can see that in Oedipus Rex Oedipus is hubris and believes that if he runs away he will be able to escape his fate. Hubris also relates to other plays with the tragic hero where the hero overestimates his ability to change his fate. 


Greek Theater: Greek theaters are usually built open and outside. Usually they are built by a sanctuary because of dramas close connection to religion. Important aspects of Greek theater are the costumes and masks the performers wear and also the orchestra and what they play. 

Dramatic Irony: Dramatic irony is where the audience knows a important piece of information that the character doesn't. There are three stages of dramatic irony, they are preparation, suspension, and resolution. We can see this irony in Oedipus, Oedipus does not now that he is running to his birth parents and does not know who they are. 


Teiresias: Teiresias is a blind prophet for Apollo from Greek mythology. He is a prophet in Thebes and is famous for being transformed into a women for seven years. He was the son of shepherd Everes and the nymph Chariclo. He appeared in many Greek tragedy's  including Oedipus Rex. 

Fate: Fate is when your path in life is already decided for you when you are born. This was a big concept in ancient Greek and made a big impact on plays and tragedy's. The Greeks believed that you have a chosen path for you but you can know this path by asking prophets of the gods.
